A report of the work of the SCADP Working Group on course classification and definitions

The Creating a Shared Language for Learning report outlines the work of the Senate Committee on Academic Development and Procedures (SCADP) Working Group to develop clear and comprehensive definitions for course components and instructional modes at Queen’s University.

The Working Group identified the need for a shared vocabulary to address inconsistencies in course classifications and delivery methods. The definitions aim to improve clarity and transparency for students, faculty, and staff by supporting a common understanding of course types and instructional formats.

This initiative builds on existing scheduling and enrolment structures. It is not intended to overhaul administrative systems, but to provide a consistent and adaptable framework that aligns with current instructional practices across Faculties and Schools.

The Working Group's process began in January 2024 and was informed by an environmental scan of peer institutions and feedback from academic units.

The definitions were approved by Senate on January 30, 2025.
