From Small Data to Big Data: Looking Forward to Look Back

This roundtable discussion organized and led by David Lyon, Director of Queen’s University’s Surveillance Studies Centre, aims to examine both the future of surveillance culture and its roots in the 18th century. Featuring Monia Mazigh (National Coordinator of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group who came to national attention through her efforts to free her husband Maher Arar from prison in Syria), Christopher Prince (strategic policy analyst with the Office of the Privacy Com91ÊÓÆµer of Canada since 2007, where his focus has been privacy implications of national security programs, surveillance practices, oversight, and domestic laws governing interception of private communications), and Scott Thompson (Banting Post Doctoral Fellow). Eighteenth-century perspectives on surveillance, censorship and privacy provided by Dr. Brian Cowan, Canada Research Chair in Early Modern British History at McGill University.
