Seminar in Literary Interpretation

Book cover of Zami

Lorde's Zami

Audre Lorde’s Zami: A New Spelling of My Name is a genre defying Black feminist text. Lorde coined the term “biomythography” to describe her work and to indicate the ways in which it combines traditional elements of biographical writing with historical fact and myth making.

We will delve into Zami for the entire semester. We will read it closely and learn to understand it in its many contexts; alongside other significant work by Lorde and the tight knit group of feminist intellectuals she worked with. In doing so, we will master the skills that required for literary interpretation.
